Sir Charles Wheatstone (1802-1875) discovered stereoscopy and designed the reflecting stereoscope, which displays two perspectives from slightly different angles as a single three-dimensional image. His stereoscope consisted of two mirrors joined at 90 degrees.

1849
David Brewster invented the first portable device for three-dimensional vision in 1849. Using prisms and lenses, the lenticular stereoscope was more compact and popular than Wheatstone's because of its portability and ease of use.

1880
The Kaiserpanorama is an optical device, a special type of stereoscope designed for collective viewing of stereograms. It was patented by August Fuhrmann in 1890 and used in Germany between 1880 and the 1920s.

1938
Wilhelm Gruber designed the first View-Master, a viewing device containing a disk of seven small stereoscopic images. The most remembered model of the View-Master today is the red one from the 1970s.

1947
The Stereo Realist is a stereoscopic camera produced by the David White Company from 1947 to 1971. It was the most popular 35mm stereoscopic camera and marked the beginning of the era of stereoscopic photography in the mid-20th century.

50s and 00s
Cinema and TV began experimenting with 3D with red and blue anaglyph glasses, creating the illusion of depth, but limited by distortion and fatigue. Since 2000, the introduction of polarized glasses has improved the visual experience much more realistic and immersive.
